Yarn – 2 balls of Knitca Cotton yarn, 100% cotton, 125m / 136yds in a 50g / 1.7oz ball in colour #0185 Crimson.
Needles – 4mm (US6) knitting needles
Notions – wool needle for weaving in ends
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS
Placemat – 45 x 30cm / 18 x 12”
Can cozy – Height – 10cm / 4”, Circumference – 20cm / 8”
GAUGE
22 sts and 27 rows = 4” / 10cm in stockinette stitch
SPECIAL TERMS AND ABBREVIATIONS
selv – selvage stitch. Slip the first and purl the last stitch of every row.
INSTRUCTIONS
Placemat:
1. Cast on 96 stitches.
2. Work in garter stitch with selvages as follows: selv, knit all stitches to last stitch, selv. Repeat for 10 rows.
3. Starting with row 11 work in stockinette stitch with garter edge as follows:
Right side row 1: selv, knit to last stitch, selv
Wrong side row 1: selv, knit 7 stitches, purl to last 8 stitches, knit 7 stitches, selv
Work “Right side row 1” and “Wrong side row 1” for 14 rows till you complete 24 rows and the piece measures 8 cm / 3” from the cast on edge.
4. Starting with row 25 work in stockinette stitch with garter edge and maple leaf motif as follows:
Right side row 2: selv, knit 25 stitches, work according to chart A, knit 25 stitches, selv
Wrong side row 2: selv, knit 7 stitches, purl 18 stitches, work according to chart A, purl 18 stitches, knit 7 stitches, selv
Repeat till you complete chart A.
5. Then work in stockinette stitch with garter edge (see step 3) for 14 rows.
6. Finish the placemat with 10 rows of garter stitch with selvages (see step 2).
7. Bind off all stitches. Weave in loose ends. Block the placemat to measurements.
Can Cozy:
1. Cast on 45 stitches.
2. Work in garter stitch as follows: knit all sts. Repeat for 4 rows.
3. Starting with row 5 work in stockinette stitch for 2 rows as follows:
Right side row 1: selv, knit to last stitch, selv
Wrong side row 1: selv, knit 7 stitches, purl to last 8 stitches, knit 7 stitches, selv
At this point you completed 6 rows and the piece should measure 2cm / 0.75” from the cast on edge.
4. Starting with row 7 work in stockinette stitch with maple leaf motif as follows:
Right side row 2: knit 13 stitches, work according to chart B, knit 13 stitches
Wrong side row 2: purl 13 stitches, work according to chart B, purl 13 stitches
Repeat till you complete chart B.
5. Then work in stockinette stitch (see step 3) for 2 rows.
6. Finish the can cozy with 4 rows of garter stitch (see step 2).
7. Bind off all stitches.
8. With right side facing to you align sides of the can cozy and sew them together using mattress stitch.
9. Weave in loose ends. Block the can cozy to measurements.
