Arm Knit Blanket in Seed Stitch – free knitting pattern

Make this beautiful textured blanket in just about 3 hours. The video will guide you through every step of knitting the blanket – from casting on stitches to working in seed stitch to finishing off. You will also learn how to put stitches aside if you want to take a break, and how to resume knitting when you are ready to work on the blanket again.

MATERIALS

Yarn – 12 balls of Super Chunky merino wool yarn in any colour of your choice. For the blanket shown in this tutorial I used Silver.

Toolswool needle for weaving in ends

INSTRUCTIONS

1. With 2 strands of yarn cast on 22 stitches:

Make a slip knot and place the loop on your left wrist. This loop is your first stitch. [Take the working yarn in your left hand. Insert your right hand from left to right into the stitch on your left wrist. Take the working yarn with your right fingers and pull it through the stitch to create a new stitch. Place the new stitch on your left wrist.] Repeat brackets until you have 22 stitches on your left wrist.

2. Work in seed stitch pattern using 2 strands of yarn:

[knit 1 stitch, purl 1 stitch], repeat the brackets to the end of the row.

2a) To work all stitches from your left wrist to your right wrist please do the following:

[To knit a stitch -Take the working yarn in your left hand so that the yarn comes from the work to the top of your left thumb and into your left palm. With your right hand take the first stitch on your left wrist, and pull it off the left hand, creating a new stitch. Insert your right hand into the new stitch from left to right so that your palms meet. Leave the new stitch on the right wrist. Pull the yarn to make the stitch smaller. To purl a stitch – Bring the yarn to the front of the work. Take the working yarn in your left hand so that the yarn comes from the work to the top of your left thumb and into your left palm. With your right hand take the first stitch on your left wrist, and pull it off the left hand, creating a new stitch. Insert your right hand into the new stitch from left to right so that your palms meet. Leave the new stitch on the right wrist. Bring the yarn to the back of the work. Pull the yarn to make the stitch smaller.]

Repeat brackets until you work all stitches from your left wrist to your right wrist.

2b) To work all stitches from your right wrist to your left wrist please do the following:

Repeat brackets until you work all stitches from your left wrist to your right wrist.

3. Repeat steps 2a and 2b until you have about 4m / 13ft of yarn left.

4. Bind off all stitches in pattern:

Knit 1 stitch. Purl 1 stitch. Pass the knit stitch over the purl stitch and off your hand. Knit 1 stitch. Pass the purl stitch over the stitch you’ve just knit. Purl 1 stitch. Pass the knit stitch over the stitch you’ve just purled.] Repeat brackets until you have just one stitch on your wrist. Pass the yarn tail through the last stitch. Pull tight to secure the yarn.

5. Weave in loose ends:

Trim yarn tails so that they are about 10cm / 4″ long. [Split one yarn tail into two strands. Thread one of the strands into a wool needle. Snake the wool needle through the strand that makes one of the stitches. Cut the excess yarn. Repeat to hide the other strand of the yarn tail.] Repeat brackets to weave in other tails.
